She Doesn't Speak English

It is so interesting to hear how other kids describe CB and how she is different. Just recently my sister told me a funny story.

My 8 year old niece, let's call her ZoDo, recently had a play date at her home. On her fridge were pictures of her extended family. ZoDo's friends, interested in who the children in the photos were, asked her about each one of them.

ZoDo names and describes each of her cousins in the photos. She then gets to CB.

"That's CB. She's 13. She doesn't speak" she says with nonchalance. As if she were describing the color of her eyes.

Her friends think she's joking. "Are you serious?" they query. They flash a look to my sister to see if she'll corroborate the story. My sister just nods. "She doesn't speak at all?" they press, a bit confused.

"Yeah" ZoDo chimes in. "She doesn't speak any English." She pauses, and then by way of clarification adds "Or Spanish. Or French. Or Chinese or Russian or any Arabic either."

Ah, well that just clears it all up! Oh, the mind of a child...

That's hilarious. Kids just tell it like it is, don't they.

I love how your niece eliminated several language possibilities! I remember when my son was about 6 and learning to talk, his syntax was off, his pronouns were reversed, and he inserted a lot of echolalia. At the playground one afternoon, I overheard one NT kid say quietly to another, "What language is he speaking?"
